Prema istraživanju univerziteta grifit (Griffit University study) deca mlađa od pet godina koja redovno pohađaju časove plivanja bolje razvijaju govorne sposobnosti, lakše uče slova i brojeve, i spremnija su za polazak u školu u odnosu na svoje vršnjake.
Četvorogodišnja studija obuhvatila je skoro 7000 roditelja mališana iz Australije, Novog Zelanda i SAD, a 177 mališana uzrasta tri, četiri i pet godina su nezavisno praćeni u toku ovog perioda.
Nije bilo iznenađujuće da su deca koja su u ranom uzrastu pohađala časove plivanja ostvarivala bolje rezultate na motoričkim testovima, doduše, ne računajući testove spretnosti sa loptom. Međutim, ono što je po rečima profesora Robina Jorgensena bilo iznenađujuće, i izazvalo posebnu pažnju kod roditelja, pedagoga, kao i zakonodavstva iz te oblasti, je to da su ova deca ostvarila značajno bolje rezultate u učenju slova i brojeva, matematičkoj logici, vizualnim motoričkim veštinama (sečenje papira, crtanje geometrijskih oblika, bojenje) kao i usmenom izražavanju.
„Izgleda da deca koja treniraju plivanje ranije dostižu standarde karakteristične za taj uzrast od normalne populacije“ kaže profesor Jorgensen.
„Ovo potvrđuje uzorak od 7000 roditelja koji su praćeni i pokriveni anketom, kao i samo testiranje dece na terenu (u nešto manjem procentu)… na primer, anketa je pokazala da mladi plivači značajno ranije savladaju brojanje do 10 nego što se to očekuje za njihov uzrast.“
Takođe, ova deca su bolje prolazila na testovima orijentacije i snalaženja u prostoru.
Studiji je zamerano to što je pretpostavka da su časovi plivanja za malu decu nešto skuplji pa nisu bili dostupni svoj deci, te da su deca iz bogatijih porodica bili u prednosti. Međutim, ovi rezultati se odnose na razliku između dece plivača i dece neplivača, bez obzira na njihov socio-ekonimsko okruženje, tj. iste razlike u sposobnostima su uočene bez obzira da li se radilo o deci iz bogatijeg ili siromašnijeg okruženja.
„Kvalitetan čas plivanja pruža mnogo mogućnosti za učenje i razvoj koji prevazilaze plivanje… što može biti od velike pomoći prilikom polaska u školu,“ navodi prof. Jorgensen.
Roditelji dece koja su u ranom uzrastu, već od 2 ili 3 godine pohađali časove plivanja navode kao jedan od najvećih benefita samopouzdanje koje dete stekne u vodi kao i van nje, što im je kasnije mnogo olakšalo polazak u školu. Takođe, deca su postala bezbedna na vodi, stekla svest o pripadanju grupi, o redosledu aktivnosti…
U zaključku istraživanja preporučeno je i školskoj deci koja baš i ne prolaze dobro u školi, posebno u mlađim razredima, da se upišu na plivanje.
Radu sa ovako malom decom se čak i u „plivački razvijenim“ zemljama (Australija, SAD) posvećuje jako malo pažnje, pa kvalitet rada varira od škole do škole. Od velike je važnosti da izaberete školu koja drži visok nivo stručnosti i kvaliteta, kao i da imaju što veće iskustvo u radu sa decom.
